2008 Honorary Chairs

Luis Velez
Chief of Police (Retired), Colorado Springs Police Department

Serving as Honorary Chair of the 2008 Race for the Cure ® is especially important to Luis, having lost his mother to breast cancer. He is married to Joyce-Anne Velez, who will serve as the Food Chair for the 2008 Race for the Cure ® .

Chief Velez has always been very active in the Colorado Springs community, serving on a number of volunteer boards: current Chair of the Life Skills Center, a School District 11 Charter High School for Drop-outs; current member on the Board of Directors of Ent Federal Credit Union; and recently a position on the Board of the local Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. He has served as a past president and board member of the local American Heart Association; a past board member of the Boys and Girls Club; a past board member of the YMCA; and a past president and board member of ComCor.

On September 1, 2006, Luis Velez retired from the Colorado Springs Police Department after 31 ½ years of service. Chief Velez started his career as a recruit officer on the CSPD on April 1, 1975, and he worked his way up through the ranks culminating with his appointment on May 13, 2002, as the Chief of Police. During his years on the police department he served in a variety of assignments: Patrol officer, Hostage Negotiator, Homicide investigator, undercover Vice and Narcotics Sergeant, Community Relations Sergeant, and Command officer in an array of CSPD divisions.

Upon retirement, Chief Velez accepted a position as the Dean of Criminal Justice at Colorado Technical University.

Peggy Thomas
Breast Health Specialist, Memorial Hospital

Peggy Thomas has been widely recognized for her work not only in the nursing field, but also in the fight against breast cancer. She is currently a breast health specialist, acting as a coordinator of all clinical services to patients seeking care at the Breast Care Center at Memorial Hospital. Her services include patient advocacy, patient and family education, counseling, collaboration with the interdisciplinary team, referral to support services, access to clinical trials, community education and events, breast care conferences, and breast self-examination clinics. In recognition for her work in the field of breast cancer, the American Cancer Society has awarded Peggy their Sword of Hope for 2007. The ACS has also named her a Volunteer of the Year and given her a Life Saver Award. She was selected as the Local Hero for the BMW Ultimate Drive ® .

No matter what position Peggy has held in the nursing field, one characteristic stands out: her support for breast cancer patients and their families, whether through education or support groups or in her role as a research nurse. Another strength of Peggy’s is the leadership she brings to any organization of which she is a part: serving on executive boards or councils, chairing many committees, facilitating workshops, and setting up new programs.

It is this dedication to the fight against breast cancer and her role as a leader in this fight that makes Peggy an excellent Honorary Chair of the 2008 Race for the Cure ® .
